AfroCubism

AfroCubism is a project that pairs African musicians with musicians from Cuba. Producer Nick Gold originally intended for the Afro-Cuban connection to arise in 1996 but visa restraints prevented the African musicians from traveling to Cuba. Instead, along with Ry Cooder the historic “Buena Vista Social Club” was produced utilizing the native Cuban musicians. The album “AfroCubism” (Nonesuch) fulfills Gold’s dream of uniting the sounds of Africa with those of Cuba. Among those appearing on the album are Cuban guitarist and singer Eliades Ochoa who appeared on the “Buena Vista” album, Cuban singer Eglis Ochoa, Cuban percussionist Jorge Maturell, Malian lute player Bassekou Kouyate, Malian guitarist Djelimady Tounkara, Malian tamani (talking drum) player Baba Sissoko, Malian singer Kasse Mady Diabate, Milian balafon player Lassana Diabaté and legendary Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté. The fourteen track album was released October 19, 2010 and has reached #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and #2 on the Billboard Top World Albums chart.
